[RECIPE] French Toast with Brown Sugar Syrup (Easy-to-Make Recipe)

Enjoy a satisfying breakfast to start your day with French toast, fry-coated with milk and eggs; and deliciously layered with butter and syrup.

French toast for a fabulous morning

Those mornings when you get fired up to start the day right with the best breakfast. Imagine the ray of sun streaming in while you sip your coffee and bask in the cheerfulness of a good day ahead.

I love this kind of mornings, but they always seemed to be paired with my favorite breakfast starters - French toast with the right amount of butter and custard syrup.

Never miss out on a sprinkle of cinnamon

French toast is an acquired taste for most Filipinos. I didn't like it the first time I had it. The way I described the taste, it's a cross between plain bread and lackluster pancake. It was bland like a slice of loaf bread soaked in milk and egg.

Now I know why the taste didn't work for me the first time. It was made without the necessary spices. It lacked the flavor that would've made the taste of milk and bread altogether appetizing as a new dish. Lesson learned, never skip cinnamon or nutmeg in your French toast.

Now that we've fixed the taste for the best French toast, how about never having to miss out on the syrup by using another ingredient that most of us might already have in our kitchen?

Like what I discussed in the About section of this blog, I advocate for utilizing readily available ingredients to make another recipe. It is my mission to get people to use what they already have to produce amazing creations, just like in most areas of my life.

Versatile brown sugar

If there is one ingredient that you can use to sweeten dishes or desserts better than just regular white sugar, and less expensive than ready-made syrups, brown sugar is the top choice.

The right amount of water mixed with brown sugar can be an alternative to honey or maple syrup. This is exactly the mixture we will drizzle on to our served French toast.

Yummy breakfast French toast with medium crisp layered with brown sugar syrup and butter

  • 3 pieces whole wheat sliced bread (preferably Gardenia)
  • 1 whole eggs
  • 1/2 cup fresh milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • salt
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 5 tbsp water

  1. Brown sugar syrup: Mix brown sugar and water in a heated pan (low heat). Reduce mixture until syrup consistency. Pour in saucer and set aside.
  2. French toast:In a bowl, mix all remaining ingredients except bread. Mix well. Soak bread and make sure the mixture is absorbed just enough. You will know when the bread gets heavier. Pre-heat pan in low setting. Fry soaked bread until brown. Fry both sides. Do the same to the remaining pieces of bread.
  3. Plate. Add butter and brown sugar syrup.

  • Make sure you don't overly absorb bread with the mixture, otherwise, the bread will disintegrate or will get too soggy.
  • You may add a bit of brown sugar syrup in the egg and milk mixture.
  • Serve French toast with scrambled eggs and bacon or corned beef on the side.
